Liquid damage is one of the most common Apple repair questions we get asked. It can happen quickly: a drink over a MacBook, an iPhone dropped near water, an iPad in a damp bag, or an Apple Watch exposed to more than it was designed for.

The most important thing is not to panic and not to keep testing the device. A device that looks fine at first can still have moisture inside, and repeatedly charging or powering it on can make the damage worse.

TekStore is an Apple Authorised Service Provider in Newquay, supporting customers across Cornwall with iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple device repair advice. If your Apple device has been exposed to liquid, use the steps below before you decide what to do next.

Quick answer: what should you do first?

  • Unplug the device and remove any charging cable or accessory.
  • Turn it off if it is safe and practical to do so.
  • Do not charge it while it is wet or showing a liquid warning.
  • Gently dry the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Do not use rice, a hair dryer, radiator, oven, compressed air, or anything pushed into a port.
  • Keep the device in a dry place with airflow.
  • Book a diagnostic check if the liquid was anything more than a light splash, or if the device behaves unusually.

Do not charge it

This is the big one. If an iPhone, iPad, MacBook or other Apple device has liquid in or around its charging port, do not plug it in to see if it still works.

Charging a wet device can cause further damage. Apple advises iPhone users to unplug cables and avoid charging until the device is completely dry. The same common-sense rule applies to other Apple devices: if liquid may be inside, keep power away from it until it has been checked or has dried properly.

If your iPhone shows a liquid detection warning, take it seriously. Do not keep trying different cables just to clear the message.

Do not put it in rice

Rice is still the advice people hear most often, but it is not a good repair method. It can leave dust or particles around ports and openings, and it does not properly remove liquid from inside a device.

A better first step is simple: disconnect power, dry the outside gently, and leave the device somewhere dry with airflow. If the device is valuable, business-critical, or has important data on it, get it inspected rather than gambling on a home remedy.

Avoid heat and compressed air

Do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, radiator, airing cupboard, oven, or direct sunlight to speed things up. Heat can damage the battery, display, seals and internal components.

Do not use compressed air either. It can push moisture further into the device or move liquid into areas that were not affected originally.

If it is an iPhone or iPad

Remove any case and wipe the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth. If there is liquid around the charging port, hold the device with the connector facing down and gently tap it to help excess liquid leave the port. Then leave it in a dry, airy place.

Do not insert cotton buds, paper towels, SIM tools or other objects into the charging port. If it will not charge later, or it keeps showing liquid warnings, book a diagnostic check.

If it is a MacBook or Mac

If liquid has gone onto a MacBook keyboard, trackpad, ports or display area, disconnect the charger immediately. Shut the Mac down if it is safe to do so, but do not keep pressing keys or trying to restart it.

Wipe away visible liquid from the outside and keep the Mac open in a normal dry environment. Do not shake it hard, heat it, or plug it back in to check whether it survived.

Mac liquid damage can affect the keyboard, battery, trackpad, logic board, display and internal connectors. Sometimes a Mac works briefly after a spill and then fails later as corrosion develops, so it is worth getting advice early.

If it is an Apple Watch or AirPods

Do not put Apple Watch or AirPods on charge while they are wet. Dry the outside gently and let them air dry. Avoid heat, compressed air and poking anything into speaker meshes, microphones, charging contacts or case ports.

Water resistance depends on the exact model, age, condition and exposure. Salt water, chlorinated water, sugary drinks and coffee are all more concerning than clean fresh water because they can leave residue behind.

What about water resistance?

Water resistant does not mean waterproof. Resistance can reduce over time through wear, drops, cracked glass, worn seals, previous repairs, heat, pressure, salt water, soaps and normal use.

Apple explains that liquid damage is not covered by the standard Apple One-Year Limited Warranty for iPhone and iPod, and Apple has separate guidance for Mac liquid damage. AppleCare+ may provide accidental damage options depending on the device, coverage and circumstances, but the correct route depends on inspection and eligibility.

If you are unsure, TekStore can help you check the right Apple support route before you commit to a repair.

When should you book a diagnostic?

Book a diagnostic check if:

  • the device was dropped into water or soaked
  • the liquid was coffee, alcohol, juice, sea water, pool water or a fizzy drink
  • the device will not turn on
  • it gets hot, restarts, freezes, or behaves strangely
  • the screen flickers, has lines, or touch stops responding
  • the keyboard, trackpad, speaker, camera or microphone has stopped working
  • the charging port shows a liquid warning or will not charge normally
  • the device contains important data you have not backed up

Liquid damage is time-sensitive because corrosion can continue after the outside looks dry. If the device matters, do not wait until it completely fails.

Can liquid-damaged devices always be repaired?

Not always. The best option depends on the device, the liquid, how long it was exposed, whether it was charged afterwards, and which parts are affected.

Sometimes the right route is a repair. Sometimes it is an Apple service option. Sometimes, especially with older devices or severe damage, replacement or trade-in advice makes more sense than spending money on the wrong repair.

TekStore can help you weigh up repair, replacement and trade-in options clearly.

FAQ

Should I turn my iPhone on after it gets wet?

If it is off, do not rush to turn it on. If it is already on and working, avoid charging it and stop using it if anything looks unusual. Let it dry and get advice if the exposure was more than a light splash.

How long should I wait before charging?

Apple says to wait until the iPhone is completely dry before charging, and its iPhone guidance mentions allowing at least 5 hours before charging or connecting an accessory. If there is still a warning, visible moisture or unusual behaviour, wait longer and get help.

Does rice fix liquid damage?

No. Rice is not a proper repair method and can introduce particles into ports and openings. Airflow, patience and professional inspection are safer.

Is liquid damage covered by Apple warranty?

Standard Apple warranty coverage does not usually cover liquid damage. AppleCare+ may give accidental damage options depending on the device and coverage, but the device may need inspection and eligibility checks.

Can TekStore help with MacBook liquid damage?

Yes. TekStore can advise on MacBook and Mac liquid damage, including whether a diagnostic, Apple service route, repair-or-replace decision, or replacement option is the sensible next step.

What if I need the data?

Stop charging and avoid repeated power tests. Tell the repair team the data matters before any work starts, especially if the device is not backed up.
